Counselors
Corner
The purpose of the counseling program is to help each individual student achieve
the highest growth, mentally, emotionally and socially. Students needing to discuss situations are to notify their teacher
of their need. Administration will be notified, and action considered from there. Emergency need to see outside source will
be the decision of the counselor and staff. Career development services are provided to every high school student. Services
include developing career awareness, resume and application skills, employment seeking strategies, interviewing techniques,
and job maintenance skills. The career information system (CIS) is also available to students.

Meadows
Valley Alumni students that were either in college or the military came to Meadows Valley School on January
6th, 2010 to speak with Meadows Valley juniors and seniors regarding their experiences. The alumni students
talked about their challenges they faced, what they would have done differently, life experiences, study habits, expenses,
adjustments and answered many excellent questions that the juniors and seniors asked. They also talked about careers,
the importance of planning for the future and the benefits of going to college or military. It was an enlightening experience
for all the students and staff that attended.

Class changes
Students may make class changes any time during the first 5 days of each semester.
Careful planning will eliminate most instances of schedule change request. Approval is required for all class changes by the
school counselor, the classroom teacher that they are dropping, the classroom teacher of the class they are adding, their
parents, or legal guardians, and returned to the school counselor prior to making the change. The school counselor will oversee
all class changes to ensure that each student will meet the Meadows Valley School Districts requirements for graduation.
Grading system Teachers will assign grades at the nine week and may use pluses (+) or minuses (-).
At the semester only whole letter grades will be used. Grade point averages are computed as follows: A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0,
D=1.0, F=0.0. Students should be familiar with each teacher’s particular grading system. Students should also be familiar
with which classes offer advanced points for higher GPA opportunities (especially those students in contention for 1st or
2nd class rank.)

will be at the discretion of the school district.

Safe and Drug Free Schools Meadows Valley School is participating in the State Department
of Education’s Safe and Drug Free Schools (SDFS) and 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st
CCLC) Programs. These programs exist to build on the strengths of Idaho students and school personnel by establishing safe,
positive learning environments before, during, and after school. Students are far more likely to realize their academic and
life skills potential in a supportive school climate that is safe and free from violence, drugs, and alcohol. The SDFS
program is funded through state and federal sources and requires Idaho school districts to create and implement a comprehensive
substance abuse and violence prevention strategy using the principles of effectiveness. The 21st CCLC program is a federally
funded after-school program which focuses on increasing ISAT performance and building life skills during the hours that most
juvenile delinquency occurs (3pm-6pm). These programs are administered by a staff of three and are directed by the Superintendent
of Public Instruction and a dynamic state-wide advisory board. The underlying premise of our work is the belief that every
school in Idaho has the potential to create a healthy, thriving school climate in which all students succeed.
Drug Free Schools Primary Objectives Develop age appropriate comprehensive drug education and prevention
programs involving parents, schools, and community. Provide a school environment that is a safe and drug-free place
for students to learn and for adults to work. Enhance interwoven prevention and awareness activities that assist
in the development of risk/ protective factors, life skills, and build on developmental assets. Prevention
Strategies Researchers have identified several strategies that seem to prevent the involvement of young
people in drug use, violence and other harmful behaviors. In implementing prevention efforts for youth, all of these strategies
should be incorporated:
