The Extreme Challenge came to Meadows Valley School on Monday November
9th. The McCall Memorial Hospital sponsors the event every other year. Meadows Valley students in grades
7th to 12th went to nine different workshops on a variety of topics which were put together by local volunteers. These volunteers
donated their time with plans to visit many schools in the surrounding area. The theme they advocated was to encourage youth
to create the life they want.
The workshops targeted teen issues and concerns. The workshop titled
“Choosing Your Success” was put on by an inspiring Olympic athlete. A police officer shared about the internet
and what teens should know about safety issues and what they need to be aware of when they text or send e-mail messages. Another
workshop gave teens the opportunity to empathize with the elderly by having them experience some of the physical limitations
of the elderly in a very create way. The importance of exercise and good nutrition was presented as students balanced on inflated
medicine balls. Another workshop described the impact of smoking and the risks involved. Healthy relationships were dealt
with in a workshop titled “No Means No”. The grand finale was an African drumming group that performed and encouraged
the students and teachers to participate in drumming and dance. It was a very informative morning and the students were given
a great deal of information to help them create not only the life they want, but to help them consider living a great life
full of healthy choices.
