Science Field Trip
By Dan Richards

Sixteen intrepid science students from Meadows Valley went on this year’s annual Science
Field Trip to Death Valley. The trip was a smashing success. Blessed by good weather and great students, a lot was a accomplished.
Students departed New Meadows on April 9th and returned, exhausted, on the 16th of April. In Death Valley students explored
many of the popular sites such as Badwater (the lowest point in North America), Devil’s Golf Course, Devil’s Cornfield,
Salt Creek (the only home of the rare Salt Creek Pupfish, Ashford Mill, the Harmony Borax Works, and the Death Valley Sand
Dunes. The students also did a great deal of hiking, including Mosaic Canyon, Golden Canyon, Natural Bridge, Zabriskie Point,
and Ubehebe Crater. Besides the exploration of
Death Valley students spent time in the Mojave desert around Las Vegas. Some of the places visited included Desert Wild-life
Refuge, Goldstrike Canyon, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, and Springs Preserve. Students were also able to investigate
the desert plants along with students from the College of Southern Nevada. Also, students enjoyed discovering the historic
ghost town of Rhyolite, Nevada, and its unusual art. All along the way students worked
hard to compose a detailed science journal from the trip. Be-sides compiling notes gathered from visitor’s centers,
brochures, lectures, and guest speakers, the students made sketches of plants and invertebrates, and kept lists of the birds
and mammals identified on the trip. A great deal of emphasis was placed on the natural history and geology of the areas visited,
however, archeology, engineering, astronomy, etc. were examined as well. Now in its 27th year, the Meadows Valley’s Science Field Trip could not exist without
the support of our local community and patrons. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to the trip. A special thank
you goes out to the Fosdick Benefit Golf Tournament and the Lightfoot Foundation.

Cafeteria Accounts By Joyce Roberts The end of another school year is fast approaching, May
is nearly here! Beginning May 1st, all charging of breakfast and lunch will stop. Please make sure your children have money
on their ac-counts so I don’t have to tell them they can’t eat! I tell them when they are low on lunch money so
ask them occasionally if they need money. It’s been a great year, and all of you have kept up well with your accounts.
Thank you all so much for the opportunity to serve your children.

A Word from Mr. Howard...

|
| Mr. Mike Howard |
Friends of Meadows Valley School;
There is
something about the winter season that is intriguing. It has always been that way and most likely will always be that
way. Each year is a bit different yet each year has that winter season.
It is such a busy time for schools
and the activities programs. It seems that buses run continuously up and down the highways. It is both busy and
exciting for students and adults. The school building is warm and safe. The structure of the day is constant
and the role of education continues in earnest.
Each new day brings new challenges and opportunities. To
me, the difference between a challenge and an opportunity is the mental approach that I, you take into that particular occasion.
Our little school district faces many challenges and opportunities each day. Some of these challenges are somewhat minor
while some are big. I feel it is important to take each challenge as it comes with care and that I, you practice patience
in the decision-making process.
With the winter season upon us, our schools do more state level testing and mid-term
testing and more, more, more... The adults in this school work very hard to provide direction and guidance for the elementary
and secondary students. This includes teachers, aides, cooks, maintenance and office staff.
Finally, the
bitter cold of winter is upon us and it will get colder. I am not as fond of the winter season as I once was but this
I do know; the staff at Meadows Valley cares about the young people attending school. Everyone works with the
same goal in mind and that is to teach and prepare students for life beyond the Meadows Valley School experience.
Mike Howard Meadows Valley School Superintendent
_________________________________________________________________________________ STUDY LUNCH...
Dear Parents,
Study Lunch is continuing
to be a great success. For the past month, several students have been in attendance to Study Lunch. Study Lunch
is for those students who have missing assignments in their classes. Teachers send them to serve Study Lunch during
their lunch hour so as they can get caught up on their work. Not only do they complete their work, they can still get
credit for their assignments instead of an incomplete. Should you have any questions regarding Study Lunch, please feel
free to contact the school. Thank you,
Mike Howard Superintendent

Meadows Valley Staff...
Spanish Club Works Diligently By Lori Maroe Spanish Club students have been working hard towards our trip
to Mexico, scheduled Spring Break of 2012. Thanks to all of you who have supported us so far! Our flock of flamingos
has toured the Meadows Valley and McCall area. Students have been working at all of the odd jobs they can get.
We have had a few yard (and other) sales, too. Watch for club students who are selling oranges and grapefruits.
These extra sweet fruits are from California. The cost to you for a case is 34.00 dollars or 17.00 dollars for
a half case. Orders are due by November 30,2011 and will be delivered around December 7th. You can also support
the club and the Meadows seniors at the bake sale on Saturday, November,19. This will be from 10am to 4pm at the Senior
Center. Please consider making a donation to the club or to an individual student who needs extra help and call me at
347-2411.
Thank you for your on-going support of our kids!

Thank You to the Community By Erin Branstetter
On behalf of Meadows Valley School students and staff, I would like
to thank all of you that support our school. The support system that we are privy to is vast considering our size. Whether
it be athletics, academics, or the arts; our patrons always step up and show support by attending our events, donating supplies
or winter clothing for a child in need, volunteering their time and giving financially. We are fortunate to come from a community
that supports us not only during special events, but all year long as well.
A few weeks ago a community potluck and auction put on by the Booster Club raised a significant amount
of money that helped the boy’s basketball team, the pep band and cheerleaders to attend the state tournament. Financial
support was given from many area businesses as well as individuals. We would like to express our gratitude to all that participated.
The crowd at the state tournament was especially impressive with many loyal fans as well as alumni in attendance. The student
athletes and band members represented our community with pride and good sportsmanship. They played hard, smiled and put their
hearts into the task at hand. They can be proud of themselves and the community they represent.
Meadows Valley is a beautiful place full of caring people. Whether you are a local volunteer, a business owner in the surrounding
area, a supporter of the supplemental levy, a parent, a staff member, or a student, we thank you for representing the Meadows
Valley in a positive manner that we can all be proud of.
